| A Nanny State? (Ingles) |

Now movements with your mobile phone can be monitored. Since the birth of the mobile phone, the technology behind the SIM cards inside them has moved at lightening speed. Lives have been saved and crimes solved from having the ability to identify a person's whereabouts when they were using their mobile phone. In the past this information was facilitated by phone records indicating the mobile phone mast that was used in connecting a particular call. However, this method has since been eclipsed by the Global Positioning System (GPS) chips that can zoom in on a mobile phone user's location, within metres - and seconds.
Virtually all mobile phones now manufactured have an inbuilt location-tracking system. Initially this tracking feature was of paramount importance with regards to the safety of the general public, although now its potential in the commercial sector is becoming apparent. The terms "Nanny State" and "Big Brother" could not ring more true in the case of some companies that are offering a tracking service for parents wanting to locate their children. Gone are the days of supposedly going to stay at a friend's house when the reality is somewhere more exciting, usually with a more desirable person! Obviously for the protective parent to pay for this monthly service would provide "peace of mind". It is also possible for text messages to be sent as alerts to children that are straying out of their parental approved zones. For parents with delinquents (or husbands, or wives) already wearing HMS prison tags, this technology would be redundant! There are companies now targeting the more positive benefits for the youth of today, such as enabling friends using network sites such as Facebook, to link up and share information. This is done once they have indicated their GPS location, although the mobile phone user must be aware that some phones with inbuilt GPS give the option of setting the phone to "location on" or "emergency only". GPS technology is now widely used by companies that provide cars for their employees. Legally a company can track their employees if they are using a company car or phone. Not only could managers spot the whereabouts of their staff but they would also have an inbuilt insurance against the theft of their vehicles. June 2009 - Louise Carter
